New Delhi: Delhi Capitals, once solely recognized for its performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is now earning widespread praise for its ambitious off-field transformation. The franchise is actively building a cricketing ecosystem focused on grassroots development, global expansion, and holistic athlete growth — a move that could reshape the future of the sport.
From IPL Team to Cricketing Institution
Since its rebranding in 2019, Delhi Capitals has expanded its role beyond being just a T20 franchise. With the aim of becoming a complete cricketing institution, the franchise has established a robust network of academies across India and abroad.
Currently, over a dozen Delhi Capitals Cricket Academies operate in key regions including Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and internationally in the United Kingdom and Canada. These academies train thousands of young cricketers aged 6 to 18, providing access to professional-level coaching, top-tier infrastructure, and support systems that mirror elite setups.
What sets these academies apart is their all-round development model. Along with cricketing techniques, young athletes are taught fitness, nutrition, mental strength, and life skills — a framework designed to produce not just skilled players, but confident and well-prepared individuals.
Long-Term Talent Pipeline
Delhi Capitals’ grassroots initiative is focused on long-term impact rather than short-term success. The franchise is investing in identifying and nurturing talent that can rise through the ranks — from academy level to IPL, domestic cricket, and even the national team.
Several players from the DC academy system have already represented their states and junior India teams, signaling the success of the initiative. A key strength lies in the seamless integration between the academies and Delhi Capitals’ elite scouting and analytics units. Promising talent is continuously monitored, mentored, and guided with precision.
Moreover, the program extends beyond players. Coaches, trainers, and sports support staff are also offered structured career development pathways, helping build a sustainable sports ecosystem.
The Man Behind the Mission
Leading this transformation is Pratik Puri, who took over as Head of Academies in late 2023. A former national-level cricketer and BCCI-certified coach, Puri brings a unique mix of grassroots knowledge and strategic vision.
Under his leadership, Delhi Capitals has expanded its academy footprint, introduced data-driven standardized curriculums, and launched its first international academy — complete with performance tracking tools, scholarship opportunities, and guidance from senior IPL coaches.
“Pratik has brought a systematic, future-focused approach to the program. He’s not just managing academies; he’s changing how cricket education operates in India,” said a Delhi Capitals official.
Vision of the Ownership
Backed by the JSW and GMR Groups, Delhi Capitals’ leadership is clear that this academy program is not a CSR or promotional activity — it is central to their core philosophy. Their aim is to position Delhi Capitals as a global cricket brand rooted in Indian values and talent.
By establishing a pipeline that nurtures players from their first coaching session all the way to professional cricket, the franchise is creating long-term value both on and off the field.
What Lies Ahead
As cricket continues to evolve into a global, high-performance sport, the need for intelligent, resilient, and well-rounded athletes is greater than ever. Delhi Capitals is addressing that need head-on — and in the process, laying the groundwork for a stronger future for the game.
By investing in young talent and building an inclusive cricketing framework, the franchise is not just preparing future champions — it is building the future of cricket itself.
