The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Guwahati, organized a comprehensive sensitization program on 13/12/2023, at the conference hall of Barpeta district Zila Parishad. The event aimed to empower 98 Gaon Panchayats President & Secretaries by disseminating information on ISI marked products and Hallmarked Jewellery.
The program focused on enlightening Gaon Panchayat leaders about BIS’s role in maintaining product and jewellery quality in the market. The event was presided over by Sh. Aroop Pathak CEO Jila Parishad and Sh.Kailash Barman Deputy CEO Jila Parishad, Semphasizing the importance of quality assurance in products. Resourced person from BIS Sh. Rahul Roy Scientist-B, Shunham Sanu, Barshajyoti Baishya were present in the event.
During the program, Presidents and Secretaries from Gaon Panchayats were educated about BIS’s origin and its critical role in ensuring product quality. They were provided information on products mandatorily requiring certification and the appropriate steps to be taken during procurement through tenders. Letters reinforcing the significance of BIS standards were already sent by post to Gaon Panchayat Presidents.
While many confirmed receipts of the letters via post, participants were encouraged to disseminate this information among local entrepreneurs. Gaon Panchayat leaders were advised to prompt local businesses to obtain licenses for using the standard mark, particularly for products mandatorily requiring certification. Additionally, the attendees were requested to urge the jewellers to obtain registration for the sale of hallmarked jewellery.
A key aspect of the program was the demonstration of the Unique Identification (HUID) marked on the jewellery itself which can be seen with help of magnifying glass available with the jeweller and verified through BIS Care APP. Attendees were also introduced to the BIS Care app, emphasizing its role in verifying the authenticity of ISI marked products and hallmarked jewellery.
This initiative underscores BIS’s commitment to raising awareness about quality standards and fostering collaboration with local leaders to ensure the integrity of products in the market.
